Madeleine Macey

Lawyer
Mental Health Law Program

Madeleine is a lawyer in the Mental Health Law Program at CLAS. In this role, she represents people who are involuntarily detained in facilities under the civil Mental Health Act. She also provides representation for people who are discharged from psychiatric facilities but who remain certified in the community, receiving treatment against their will.

Additionally, Madeleine represents people who find themselves under the jurisdiction of the BC Review Board after a court has made a finding of not criminally responsible due to mental disorder. She also appears at fitness hearings to determine whether, given a person’s mental state, it would be fair for that person to undergo court proceedings.

All types of people face challenges with their mental health. Madeleine has represented working professionals, recent refugees, people with disabilities, new parents, students, seniors, athletes, musicians, and artists as they navigate the difficult experience of receiving involuntary treatment.
