Professor Margot Young

Margot (she/her) has degrees from UBC, UofT, and UCBerkeley. She began teaching law at the Faculty of Law at the University of Victoria in 1992 where she taught Social Welfare Law, Legal Process, Constitutional Law and Feminist Legal Theory. In 2002, Margot moved to the UBC Faculty of Law and has been there since, ultimately as a Full Professor. She teaches such courses as Federalism, Public and Charter Law, Social Justice Law, Jurisprudence, and Feminist Legal Theory. She has served on a range of university committees, including the University Ombuds Advisory Committee (as Chair), the Faculty Equity Committee, Admissions, UBC Senate, Senior Advisory Committee (oversight of tenure and promotion across the University) and for three terms as Equity Chair at the Faculty Association. Margot’s scholarship is in the areas of social justice and constitutional law. She has written, for example, on equality rights, guaranteed annual income, section 7 and social justice litigation, housing, and feminist theory.
Margot is active in civil society equality and justice seeking organizations. She recently finished a nine-year term on the Board of Directors of the Suzuki Foundation (six years as Chair of the Board) and currently sits on the Suzuki Institute Board. She has been on the Board of Justice for Girls for over two decades and continues to be active in the work that organization does. At different times in the last twenty years, she has also been active with BC CEDAW, with the Binners’ Project, NAWL, FAFIA, and LEAF. She regularly sits on litigation advisory groups for NAWL and West Coast and National LEAFs. Margot is a frequent commentator in various media and she is active in presenting her research work and scholarly perspectives in a range of settings.
